TITLE: Transgenic Technologist
LOCATION: Toronto
The TCP is a new state-of-the-art research centre enabling groundbreaking research and discovery, with the goal of advancing human health. We are the largest Centre in Canada, brought about through an innovative scientific collaboration among four pre-eminent research hospitals: Mount Sinai Hospital, St. Michael’s Hospital, the Hospital for Sick Children, and the University Health Network (representing Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, and Princess Margaret Hospital).
The TCP is a globally acclaimed Canadian resource that serves researchers throughout the world. Located in the heart of Toronto’s Discovery District, the TCP pools functional expertise and resources under one roof, all to enable the best science, supported by the best infrastructure. Our ability to generate, hold, analyze, archive and distribute a critical mass of genetically engineered mice is unique. Our scientific staff has expertise in mouse generation, breeding & maintenance, phenotyping, pathology and cryopreservation. We also house three world-class Hospital-based Research Programs: The Centre for Modeling Human Disease (CMHD); the Canadian Mouse Mutant Repository (CMMR); and the Mouse Imaging Centre (MICe).
ROLE:
TCP has an immediate need for a Transgenic Technologist-(weekends). The Transgenic Core & Specialty Resources team provides an extensive, highly specialized service for a variety of investigators from our member hospitals, other university & research institutes and industry clients to culture and manipulate mouse Embryonic Stem (ES) cells and maintain the daily operation services of Transgenic Core Facility necessary for production of genetically-engineered mouse models (GEMM).
Note: this position is a full-time regular appointment, covering weekends and stat holidays (i.e. 37.5 hr. work week – Thursday through Monday – with Tues/Wed off).
Reporting:
The Transgenic Technologist reports to the Associate Director, Transgenic Core & Specialty Resources.
Specific Responsibilities:
• ES cell culture
• Electroporation, drug selection, colony picking, replica plating
• Preparation of ES cell clones for aggregation & microinjection
• Animal husbandry
• Intraperitoneal injection
• Selection of estrus and checking plugs
• Maintenance of transgenic mouse colonies
• Mouse identification and tissue biopsies
• Data entry and record keeping
REQUIREMENTS:
Suitable candidates must have BSc/BA in biology or related discipline; can be recent college graduate with education in laboratory techniques or have an equivalent combination of education and experience. Mammalian tissue culture and animal experience is an asset but training will be provided. Experience in Molecular Biology is a plus. Must be able to work in a team environment, have excellent communication (both written & verbal), interpersonal and organizational skills and willingness to learn novel techniques. Must posses an excellent work ethic, maintain a professional attitude, high standards for accuracy, attention to detail and trouble-shooting capability.
