TBI Bioscan Newsletter - July 2008
Message From The Executive Director
I am now one month into the job of Executive Director of TBI and it is both an honour and a privilege. In that time, I have become actively involved in the Committees for Membership, the September 17 Membership Mix and Match, Research to Revenue, National Biotech Week, Communications, TBI Golf Tournament, the Green Tech Conference, Board of Directors, Biotechnology Accord, the C-Level Forum Review, President’s Awards Dinner and the Executive Committee. On behalf of TBI, I have been part of the opening of the new Research Innovation and Commercialization Centre in Mississauga, the new Health Technology Exchange HTX Program Offices at MaRS, the BIO Industry Conference in San Diego and have helped arrange the Beyond Moose and Mountains event for BIOTECanada.
I have had the privilege of hiring and getting to know Ali Ibrahimi, who has joined us from the Master of Biotechnology Program at University of Toronto Mississauga as the Manager of Communications and Membership. He and I have moved the TBI office to its new location in the Heritage Building at MaRS, have set up new email addresses, phone and fax numbers, business cards, letterhead and are completing the new individual and corporate membership forms. We have also helped make changes in the TBI web site so you can now see the corporate affiliations of all our members at http://www.ontbi.org/Members .
The role for Ali and I now is to develop new members both individual and corporate, and to bring back many of the former members of TBI who no longer participate. We plan to grow and improve the content of some of the events of the TBI, to make all of them more inclusive and to start to take on events across the Province. We are already starting to distribute the e-Bioscan Newsletter to a wide readership across Ontario, Ali will soon be able to put up on the web site an ever-growing data-base of Ontario life science companies, we are working on a members’ site where TBI members can communicate with each other and the new job site that is being prepared by Bonnie Kuehl.
Although I have been involved with the TBI for ten years, looking at it from this new perspective what impresses me most is the strength, dedication, wisdom and tenacity of the volunteers and Chairs of the TBI Committees. These are busy people who give their very valuable time to organize, contribute and assist their projects and bring them to fruition. The other very impressive aspect of TBI is the strength of the new Board of Directors and their desire to transform the TBI from a small, locally focused group into a large, inclusive organization with members from across the Province and across the life science spectrum. I believe that the TBI has the potential to be the greatest life science organization in Canada and one of the leading member organizations in the world of biotech. I hope that I can help it reach this goal.
Regards,
Michael Stinson
