TBI Bioscan Newsletter - January 2008
Message From President's Award Committee
Hard to believe it’s January already and that the TBI President’s Gala is just a little over a month away. And with the organizing committee ironing out the final details, time is running out to get your tickets to what promises to be a special evening dedicated to fine dining, networking and recognition of individuals who have contributed to the success of the life science industry across the country.
Each year we attract VIP individuals from all levels of government, and some of our past esteemed guests have included the likes of Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, who has spoken at the conference a number of times introducing some of his activities through the Ministry of Research and Innovation and Mayor David Miller, who gave a warm welcome to the audience last year discussing the city of Toronto’s role in supporting biotech through economic development.
This year we’re hoping to see more of the same faces and then some, with federal members of parliament scheduled to attend in recognition of Lifetime Achievement Award winner Alan Bernstein.
We are also proud to announce that Alan Bernstein will be on hand to accept his award in person!
One of the other special things we do to honour our Lifetime Achievement winner is to have the people that have worked closely with them provide their own special salute to the winner and offer their congratulations. I can assure you with their assistance we’ve put together quite the video.
In addition to Alan Bernstein, three other award winners shall be honoured. On the community service side we have a great opportunity to recognize all the hard work Susan Smith has done with RBC ventures. The same can be said on the public service side where TBI will honour David Lindsay who has accomplished so much in a number of capacities here in Ontario. In terms of our Volunteer Award winner, John Goudey has been a longstanding volunteer with TBI, engaged in a variety of functions and a very deserving honouree.
Additionally, we’ve also been approached by BIOTECanada, who will take the podium to get things underway, making their own annual award presentation proving that what started out 10 years ago as a means to really recognize the outstanding success of people that have made major contributions to biotech in Canada, has grown and expanded to the point we are now working with other organizations and institutions.
And of course we can’t forget the food, which as always is first class and one of the many reasons we’ve stuck with Four Seasons for our venue. Options will include either a meat or a fish, and for those that want a vegetarian alternative we have that too.
We’ve had a lot of fun doing this, giving recognition to the people that have accomplished great things, while at the same time celebrating their achievements.
