TBI Bioscan Newsletter - February 2008
Message From the President
February has always been a very busy but exciting time for us at TBI and this year is no exception. With our grand event: the ‘Celebration of Success’ Presidents Awards Gala’ just a few weeks away, we’re happy to say that several big names have confirmed that they will be joining us for this very special occasion, among them The Minister of Research and Innovation John Wilkinson and former Deputy Prime Minister John Manley. Now with just a few tables left, the Gala looks to be headed towards another sell out.
The good news doesn’t stop there, as the chair of TBI’s membership committee, Adi Treasurywala, has announced we are moving forward with an exciting new initiative, the ‘Member - Get a Member Program.’ The program rewards our existing members for bringing new members into TBI giving them a 10% discount off their next membership. This program is expected to run for 90 days starting this month through to the end of June. Keep an eye out on the website for more details on this program.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to announce something that few of you know a lot about, but we’re hopeful to get you on board: the Life Science Coalition. Born out of a strategy that the Biotechnology Council of Ontario first worked on in 2006, the Life Science Coalition represents an opportunity for TBI and its members to come together with industry and form a strategy in dealing with key issues facing biotech in Ontario.
The coalition is made up of a number of individuals including Ulli Krull from the University of Toronto and Mississauga, Steven Dibert from MEDEC, Robert Foldes from York Biotech, Darlene Homonko from Golden Horseshoe Biosciences Network, Gord Surgeoner from Ontario Agrifood Technologies and myself from TBI. The coalition’s plans include putting together a survey for all the different associations and key stakeholders of biotech in Ontario, with TBI members invited to participate and we are equally receptive to those that want to help out in getting the process underway.
Lastly, at our board meeting in January, we made the decision to take the next step to move to a full time executive director and we’re using our network of members and the people that we know to help us find that person. Candidates are welcome to come forward and an outline of the position is available on our website at www.ontbi.org/careers. Also, if you know someone interested, they can contact me at grant.tipler@ontbi.org for more information.
