TBI names its new Executive Director

As part of the effort to expand its opportunities in the rest of Ontario, The Biotechnology Initiative is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Stinson to the position of Executive Director effective June 1st.

Stinson has been a member of TBI for more than ten years and as such he has an understanding of how the organization works and is familiar with its members.
As Executive Director, Stinson will report to the Chair of the TBI Board of Directors, which is made up of corporate members, individual members including a student representative, four regional representatives and an independent. Stinson will also join the Executive Committee.

Since 2001, Michael has been executive director of BioFinance Canada where his role was to develop the sponsor base, increase the number and quality of presenting companies, and to increase the number of attendees at each conference. In previous assignments, Michael was president of CTD Clinical Trial Developments Inc., a spin out of Endpoint Research Ltd., which provided research management services to hospital research departments for Phase II and Phase III clinical trials. As a consultant, he conducted market and investment research for a variety of public and private sector clients including: Medical Research Council, Industry Canada, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Department of Foreign Affairs & International Trade, and various private clients. He also published: Canadian Biotechnology Status of Research and Clinical Trials, Directory of Canadian Clinical Research Facilities and the Directory of Canadian Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Industry.

He began his career as a trade commissioner in trade and investment for Technologies for the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs with assignments from 1974 to 1998 in Beirut, Sydney, Rio de Janeiro, Amman, Yokohama, Tokyo and San Diego. He has a BA in Economics from the University of Western Ontario and an MBA from the University of Toronto.

He believes the two roles (as executive director of both BioFinance and TBI) will fit well together and benefit both organizations.

“TBI provides members with content and networking opportunities, and I think my role as executive director will be to work towards improving the content, to make the organization more appealing for people to belong to and to improve and expand networking opportunities,” stated Stinson.

“In this new role, my duties will include working towards making the organization bigger, and I believe I can help TBI achieve this mandate as it sets out to be the voice of biotech in Ontario,” he concluded.
