TBI December Breakfast: Membership Marathon
Zoe Yi Zhang
Despite the -8°C wind chills, more than 70 attendees with their highest enthusiasm attended TBI’s December 18th 2008 breakfast meeting. The December breakfast meeting, traditionally dubbed the "membership marathon" as it allows TBI members to briefly present their involvement within the life science industry, was a great opportunity for members to learn about each other's endeavors within the biotech space.
Dr. Don Stewart from PlantForm Corporation presented his company's efforts in developing a tobacco-based system for the manufacturing of biosimilar drugs. The company has the proprietary technology licensed from the University of Guelph. The company’s two developing products are a cancer antibody and a vaccine for the fatal diarrheal disease Cryptosporidiosis. The strategic alliance model of product development with a pharmaceutical partner will provide the company the funding necessary to strengthen its R&D and marketing power.
Dr. George Nikopoulos then presented on Nucro-Technics' contract services to pharmaceutical companies. The speciality of Nucro-Technics in pharmaceutical chemistry differentiates it from other partnership-orientated firms.
Mr. Lahav Gil, the CEO and Director from Kangaroo Design & Product Development explained in thorough detail Kangaroo's Technology Innovation and Product Development services that it provides to organizations commercializing medical devices and other new technologies and products. From engineering, prototyping, manufacturing and technology advance, Kangaroo design appears to do an excellent job by categorizing customers helping early starters, innovation groups, and mature companies and strategically targeting them with different services, such as clinical design, sales and marketing, out sourcing and end-user centered product design.
An interesting talk about a pharmaceutical firm was presented by Dr. Bradford Brinton, the Associate Director from Nycomed Canada Inc. The company’s contribution in the therapeutic areas of gastroenterology, respirology dermatology, and pain management was impressive; Nycomed’s strategy in pipeline sourcing and business development programs will likely prove successful enough to withstand the current tough economic environment.
Mr. Rajesh Dixit from Datazoom Solutions Inc. illustrated how Datazoom's data management products help healthcare industry players, including hospital and research organizations and pharma companies.
As Corporate Relations Directors, Helena Mistry and Alex Spinelli from The National Business and Technology Conference invited members to this year's upcoming conference, themed "Adaptability - Succeeding in a Changing World", with examples drawn from different industries in changing circumstances.
For me, December’s breakfast meeting was a great opportunity to learn about new technology, successful business models and peripheral business of biotech firms. It was also a great opportunity for members to network and for companies in biotech and related fields to discuss the current economic circumstance.
