TBA The Biotechnology Initiative

The Voice of Bioscience in Ontario

Reflections on BIO 2008

In attending the 2008 BIOIndustry Conference in San Diego for TBI I was trying to accomplish three goals:

1. To introduce myself to as many members and potential new members for our association. I concentrated my effort in the Exhibit Hall where I made contact with the following Ontario companies and organizations exhibiting and attending:

Alphora Research
Arctic DX
AstraZeneca Canada
Ashuren Health Sciences
Axela BioScensors
BioNiche Life Sciences
Canada’s Technology Triangle
CanReg Inc
Cangene Corporation
Council of Ontario Universities
Ernst & Young Canada
GangaGen Life Sciences
Globaltox International Consultants
Gowling LaFleur Henderson LLP
GSK Canada
In Danio BioScience
Iseehear Inc.
KGK Synergize Inc.
Eli Lilly Canada
Lorus Therapeutics
Luzchem Research
Janssen-Ortho
McCarthy Consultant Services Inc
Merck Frosst Canada
NucroTechnics
Ontario Institute of Cancer Research
Patheon Inc.
Pfizer Canada
Pharmeng Technology
Piramal Healthcare
Roche Canada
Sanofi Pasteur
Scian Services
Smart & Bigger
Spartan Bioscience
Torealis Research
Toronto Centre for Phenogenomics
Toronto Stock Exchange
University Health Network
Vasogen Inc.

2. To meet other leading life science organizations and discuss what they are doing. These are associations involved in strategic initiatives in their jurisdictions to greatly support their life science industries. There are many great examples but the best include:

BioCom San Diego
BioQuebec
Illinois Biotechnology Industry Association
Life Sciences British Columbia
Massachusetts Biotechnology Council
Pennsylvania Bio

3. To get to know about the current issues that are driving life science companies. These include: for companies in research phase, dealing with shortages of capital in both public and private markets; regulatory issues and problems particularly at the FDA; opportunities in ag-biotech and bio-energy; and vaccines and issues of global health.

Although it is now massive in size, the BIOIndustry Conference is still a great forum for getting a lot of business contacts in a short period of time.
