MITACS: Making research count
Founded in 1999, MITACS has played a leadership role in linking businesses, government and not-for-profits with over 50 of Canada’s universities to develop cutting-edge tools to support the growth of our knowledge-based economy.
Through the Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) program, MITACS funds mathematical sciences research projects throughout the country, focusing on five key economic sectors: biomedical and health; environment & natural resources; information processing; risk & finance; and communication, networks & security.
It is both a federally- and provincially-funded research network with offices in Ottawa, Burnaby, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Montréal, Quebec City, Fredericton and St. John’s. In Septermber of 2008 it opened its first office in Toronto on the York university campus.
In 2003, MITACS established a first-of-its-kind internship program - MITACS ACCELERATE - which connects Canadian graduate students and their professors with companies to facilitate knowledge transfer and introduce the private sector to the research expertise within Canada’s universities.
Under ACCELERATE Ontario, graduate interns spend a minimum of 50% of their time over a four month-period at a company, undertaking research on a problem jointly identified by the intern, business, a supervising professor and MITACS. The balance of the students’ time is spent at the university, developing new tools, technologies or methods to address the company’s challenge. The cost of an internship is $15,000, which is shared by the partner company and the ACCELERATE Program through the support of the Federal and Ontario Governments. The intern receives $10,000 of the grant as a stipend and the additional funding supports other costs associated with the internship.
