Don Stewart
PlantForm Corporation: President and Chief Executive Officer, Don Stewart
Dr. Don Stewart, an entrepreneur and scientist, is a founder of PlantForm Corporation and assumes the roles of President and Chief Executive Officer. PlantForm is an emerging biotechnology company, established in 2008, and focused on the development of technology licensed from the University of Guelph for the production of low cost biologic drugs in tobacco plants.
Dr. Stewart graduated with a Ph.D from the University of London, UK and gained academic experience at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada before joining Cangene Corporation in 1985. As the Director Research for Cangene Corporation Dr. Stewart was responsible for the company’s Mississauga based research and development department overseeing 30 scientific and technical staff. This group was focused on development of antibody and protein drug candidates and was the driver behind the early development of a number of biosimilar protein drugs, one now licensed by the FDA. Dr. Stewart was responsible for obtaining over $15 million in external grant and contract funding for the department from 2002 to 2007. These contracts, directed at mitigation of bioterrorism threats, included projects to develop antibodies for protection and treatment of exposure to Ebola Virus and Ricin poison.
In addition to his responsibilities for PlantForm Corporation Dr. Stewart is also the founder and President of Alba Biologics Group, a consulting company established in 2007. Alba Biologics provides expertise on drug candidate evaluation, development and manufacturing strategies. Dr. Stewart supports the academic community as a Special Graduate Faculty member of the Department of Environmental Biology at the University of Guelph. Dr. Stewart is the President of the board of St. Alban’s Boys and Girls Club. St. Alban’s is a community organization providing services to children and youth in three locations of Toronto including the Jane-Finch area.
